“The disciples told Jesus to send the multitudes away “so that they may go…and buy themselves something to eat.”But Jesus said to them, “You give them something to eat!” Mark 6:36-44
With this crazy crisis of Corona virus and food supply, God reminded me of this story. It happened as I was reading my way through the Bible in Mark. I read Mark 6, 7 then 8. In Chapter 6 Jesus miraculously feeds 5,000 people and in chapter 8 the disciples were faced with feeding the crowd AGAIN. And when Jesus asked them to feed the people, the disciples acted like they’d never experienced the feeding of the 5,000! They told Jesus, “Where will anyone be able to find enough to satisfy these men here with bread in a desolate place?” So I went back to Mark 6 and sure enough, Jesus and these same guys had indeed fed 5,000 plus! It was probably double that because they only counted the men. So how long was it before they were called on to feed a large group again? It couldn’t have been too long? Jesus only had this public ministry for three years!
This got me to thinking about the entire passage and about our lives right now. First of all, if you back up to Mark 6:31, Jesus had instructed them to “Come away by yourselves to a lonely place and rest awhile.” Jesus knows how busy we get and wants us to rest. Sometimes we need to be slowed down because otherwise we wouldn’t do it. This virus is giving us all a slow down and rest time. Let us receive it without worry and truly take time to rest in Him and in His Word and listen for His voice. His voice and Presence is the very best treasure in life. John 6:35 reminds us that Jesus is the Bread of Life.
But what about food? Amongst all the things we can worry about, it can boil down to food and water, the things necessary to survive. So God showed us in Mark 6 and then again in Mark 8 that He will supply all our needs when we are following Him.So please receive these lessons with me and :
REST in Him during this slowed down time.
RELY on Him to make your food (and toilet paper) multiply and last beyond that which is normal. And lastly,
REMEMBER the last great thing He did for you.
Let’s Pray: Oh Dearest Lord, Father and Provider, we praise You as our Father who gives us rest, Who Provides for us and Who does great things for us! Forgive us for our short human memory and the way we focus on the current problem and forget what you just did for us. We thank You for this slowing down time. Holy Spirit give us the spirit of rest to actually enjoy this time with You. And Good, Good Father, we make note of how you turned 5 loaves and 2 fish into more than enough for over 5,ooo! Surely we can garner at least a mustard seed of faith to trust You to feed us how we need to be fed right now. Oh Lord, You love us so much. Please have compassion on those who don’t know You. May they open their hearts to you at this time. Allow us to be a witness of Your peace and provision. We are but sheep who desperately need their Shepherd. Thank You for being ALL we need. We trust You. We love You. Amen.
